September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, so there’s no better time to be reminded that early detection of prostate cancer saves lives. Many prostate owners are nervous at the thought of having an exam, so we’re here to let you know what to expect. Being prepared is the first step in getting this life-saving test done.
The prostate is a part of the reproductive system for those who were assigned male at birth. It is an organ that is about the size of a walnut and is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Its main function is to produce fluid that makes up part of the semen.
The procedure itself is not painful, and afterwards, you should not feel any side effects or have any discomfort. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have hemorrhoids or anal fissures, as they can be irritated by the examination.
When you and your healthcare provider are both ready to begin:
When the exam is done, your medical professional will offer you some tissue or pre-moistened wipes to clean the lubricant from your body.
